7 Superfoods That Can Change Your Life

blueberries_superfoodsYou are what you eat is an adage that holds more truth than you may realize. Unfortunately, many people today focus their diet around processed foods that are high in sugar, sodium and fat. Diets such as this can increase a person’s risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and more. You can protect your body and health against such illnesses, however, by eating lean meats, fresh vegetables, and by adding the following “superfoods” to your diet.

#1) Broccoli

This edible stalky plant of the cabbage family is loaded in potassium, vitamin B-6, vitamin C magnesium, and calcium. Scientists believes broccoli’s phytochemicals – organic chemical compounds which occur naturally – are able to aid in skin health, regulate blood sugar levels, strengthen the immune system, and ward off joint inflammation. continue reading »

7 Things You Should Know About Acupuncture and Pregnancy

pregnancy-071414Acupuncture involves the placement of thin sterilized needles to stimulate various acupoints throughout the body. The stimulation of these areas is believed to correct imbalances and blockages in the body by promoting the healthy flow of energy (known as qi – pronounced CHEE).

The thought of having half a dozen or more tiny needles sticking into your skin when you’re pregnant, might sound frightening. However, it’s actually a safe, painless, straightforward procedure that can treat a number of adverse symptoms associated with pregnancy. continue reading »

Should healthcare make you healthy?

HEALTHY!
GETTING HEALTHY!
Should healthcare make you healthy?

Forbes reports that in 2013, the United States spent 3.8 trillion dollars on healthcare. Americans want to be healthy but the hard facts show that good health is not for sale. If you want to live a healthy lifestyle then take ownership of your health. If you choose to become and stay healthy, make a commitment of:

TIME: The true measure of the value you place on your health.
WORK: A healthy Iifestyle does have a to-do list.
MONEY: Investing in your health is investing in yourself.

According to data compiled by Marketdata Enterprises, a market research firm that specializes in tracking niche industries, Americans spend north of $60 billion annually to try to lose pounds but only manage to lose money. We have all heard about the tread mill magically transforming into a very expensive clothing rack. Products promising to help us lose weight without even trying are filling up the airwaves. Recently, Dr. Oz was called before the US Congress to explain why he is dedicating so much airtime on national television to publicize the outrageous claims of products that have not been properly tested for safety or effectiveness. Dr. Oz promised to consider what he publicizes more carefully in the future.

The Nielsen Company reports that in 2013, the sales of Over The Counter (OTC) products was 33.1 billion dollars. These products contain drugs that don’t require a prescription from your doctor. So everything from acne remedies to Zinc supplements qualifies as an OTC product. Generally, these products intend to treat the acute symptoms of a chronic medical condition. Consumer spending for OTC products has more than doubled since 2003. Unfortunately, money alone cannot buy good health. Products may relieve symptoms but products will not make you healthy. A reasonable plan designed to gently balance your lifestyle will help you become and stay healthy.

How much does lifestyle contribute to suffering with a chronic medical condition? How often are the choices we make responsible for the flare ups that make getting through the day difficult? The most common of the chronic diseases are Type 2 Diabetes, High Cholesterol and High Blood Pressure. These chronic long term medical conditions can lead to medical emergencies like stroke and heart attack. Recently the major cause of these diseases has been identified as a disease. Now being overweight is legally considered a disease condition in the United States.

Science has shown that these conditions are directly related to lifestyle choices. Living according to lifestyle choices that do not promote good health causes conditions that are dangerous. Since the cure is changing your way of living, drugs are designed to manage these conditions. Unless you make different choices, you will need the drugs for the rest of your life. All drugs have physical and financial side effects. Each pill you take adds to the cost of healthcare as the drug diminishes the quality of your life while theoretically extending your life.

Perhaps the approach we are taking to healthcare is the basic problem. Ancient cultures also created healthcare systems. These systems of medicine are based on prevention. The basic premise of these ancient systems was focused on maintaining good health. Staying healthy was recognized as easier and less expensive than treating a disease.

The modern healthcare system doesn’t become involved in your healthcare until you become sick. The modern medical system is not concerned with healthy people working to stay healthy. There are very few medical insurance benefits that encourage a healthy lifestyle.

No one wants to be sick. We really do want to be healthy, but many have not been taught the skills to become and stay healthy. Typically, in the United States, neither schools nor families teach children how to be healthy.

There are licensed health professionals who can help you to learn the skills you need to become and stay healthy. As a licensed acupuncturist, I am trained in a holistic system of medicine. My training focused on gently balancing a patient’s lifestyle. In this system, the prevention of disease is considered the highest form of medicine. I specialize in gently balancing physical, mental and emotional imbalance.

The Season of Summer

Ahh, summer

time for long, sunny days, warm weather, and brightly-blooming gardens. But the season is also significant in another way. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the body’s Organ systems are most accessible during specific times of year. During the late summer, the Spleen and Stomach are most active and most open to influence both positive and negative.

The Spleen and Stomach are associated with the Earth element, as well as certain colors, sounds, times of day, and other correspondences (see table). The Earth element is related to security, feeling grounded and the natural rhythms of life.

The Spleen performs many functions, including:

  • Transforming food and fluids into energy
  • Transporting energy to muscles, flesh and limbs
  • Ensuring that blood circulates throughout the body
  • Producing a “lifting” effect, keeping the internal organs in place
  • Governing our capacity for thinking and concentration

The Stomach is paired with the Spleen, and helps to digest food and transform it into energy. When the Spleen and Stomach are in balance and Qi (“life energy”) is flowing freely through them, the body will have physical energy and vitality, good muscle tone, a healthy appetite and good digestion. The Spleen and Stomach can be affected by many factors, including poor diet and eating habits, lack of exercise, excessive concentration, worry and stress.

If your Spleen and Stomach are out of balance, you may experience uncomfortable symptoms (see table on front). Even if you’re not experiencing symptoms, it’s an especially good time to receive preventive acupuncture care. Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine provide a natural approach to restoring and maintaining balance. When we strive for optimal balance, we achieve good health throughout the year.

By allowing Qi to flow freely, acupuncture can help your body heal itself and help you make the most of all the energy and fun of summer!

Acupuncture and the Heart

Research has shown that acupuncture can improve the health of patients who experience severe heart problems by dramatically reducing the activity in the sympathetic nervous system that regulates heartbeat and blood pressure.

The study conducted through the Los Angeles School of Medicine suggests that acupuncture can be used “successfully with long-range results in improving hypertension, and it may also be beneficial in lowering sympathetic nerve activity.”

Overactivation of the sympathetic nervous system is common with patients who suffer from heart problems. Over time, this may cause the heart to work harder, forcing blood to flow through blood vessels that are constricted due to heightened nerve activity.

The study showed that sympathetic nerve activation was significantly reduced in those individuals who received acupuncture care compared to those who only received a placebo. The lead physician in the study, Dr. Middlekauff, suggests, “that more study is needed before acupuncture can be recommended, but acupuncture has been used successfully and with long-range results in improving hypertension, and it may also be beneficial in lowering sympathetic nerve activity.”
